The strides that Kaaga Boys’ High School has made in the academic front have been as a result of functional Departments.

   Through these departments, it has been possible to delegate important school functions that would otherwise have been impossible to accomplish.  The team of dedicated Heads of Department has done their bit with the necessary commitment and sense of purpose.

   The Heads of Departments have identified and owned their departments in a very admirable way. This has brought about a spirit of competition for excellence among the departments. The academic departments have succeeded mainly because they are supported by equally dedicated subject heads.  With this unity and sense of purpose, Kaaga Boys’ can only continue being great.

DISCIPLINE DEPARTMENT

Discipline has been the bedrock of Kaaga Boys’ improved academic performance.

The office of The Deputy Principal normally co-ordinates discipline issues in the school.  The School Principal, a no-nonsense person, has greatly contributed to the high standards of discipline in the school with the support of all the teachers who monitor and forward students whose conduct is wanting.  Some cases are referred to the guidance and counselling department for assistance.  Other cases are categorised as either major or minor offences.  For major offences which include sneaking, stealing, fighting, drug abuse and being in possession of mobile phone, the students are given a one week suspension after which they report back to school accompanied by their parents.  These offences have tremendously reduced as a result of close monitoring and a variety of good programmes that keep the students busy.

Minor offences comprise of lateness, noise making and failure to do duty.  These cases are dealt with by the teachers on duty or the class teachers.

The teamwork at Kaaga Boys’ has actually brought about high standards of discipline that has translated to improved academic performance now standing at a mean grade of B minus and soon moving to B plain.  Our aim is to be the most disciplined school in the region.

TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT

 

    Our school offers four electives in this department namely, Business Studies Computes Studies, French and Agriculture.  The school has intentions of increasing the subjects offered in order to give students more subjects to choose.

      Our handicap has been shortage of rooms and other infrastructure but this time round the school has built extra rooms which have been utilized well.

GAMES AND SPORTS

This department is the hot-bed of talents.  It enhances national unity through interractions and competitions at all levels. We have done well in disciplines like Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Rugby and all Racket games.

Games and Sports  has also enhanced creativity amongst students through indoor games such as chess and scrabble.

The department has nurtured talents over years.

I.T. DEPARTMENT

The department was recently introduced to help integrate ICT in teaching and learning in the school.

    The school is connected with internet and this enables both teachers and students to get learning materials in digital form as well as take part in online learning.  The school administration has been very supportive in ensuring that the school is not left behind as the world goes digital. The department is expected to improve its capacity in the next few years to cater for the growing need for ICT in learning and teaching.

DEPARTMENT OF CLUBS AND SOCIETIES

This department was established early 2009.  It took off on a high note because every member of the school community was encouraged to participate.  The main purpose of this department is to cultivate, nurture, promote and reap the teachers and students hobbies, talents and skills.

     The department is divided into three categories namely – hobby-based clubs; where students are guided and encouraged to identify and horne their creative abilities.  The other category is the faith-based clubs which guide students on spiritual matters both of personal and communal levels.  The other one is the subject based clubs like History, Science, Geography etc.  These ones promote students abilities in individual subjects.

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING

This is  one of the main department in our school. It takes care of the general welfare of the students e.g emotional needs, material needs, as well as the well-being of the whole person. Our main objective is to create a holistic person who can fit well in the society.

It comprises of a whole guidance and counseling team which is committed to helping the students to overcome day-to-day challenges as they go through their academic journey. The team formulates various programmes to help  address various needs of the students. These include; orientation programme for Form ones, academic programmes during which Form  IV students are taught on various Examination skills,Guidance and counseling programmes fortnightly and Examination prayer programme for Form Fours during the K.N.E.C.Exams.

The team also collaborates with other departments such as Discipline to ensure smooth running of the school. Therefore Guidance and Counseling is one of the pillar departments and has enabled the school to rise to great heights of academic Excellence.

LANGUAGES  DEPARTMENT.

The language department in Kaaga Boys’ is made up of English and Kiswahili Sub-departments. The school does not offer any foreign language. We are a committed workforce of twelve teachers and a reinforcement of two  B.O.M hired teachers currently the mean score stands at 7.3 in 2014, which is below our project mean grade of 8.00 in 2015. Our strength as a department lies in teamwork and wide consultation. We look forward to achieving our set target of 8.5. Considering where we were 10 years ago, in the region of a mean of 5.2,

we believe  we shall get there.

We are making slow but sure progress. Through hard work and commitment

By both teachers and students, we hope to reach our target.

CURRICULUM DEPARTMENT

This is one of the vibrant department in the school that is made up of academic committee of 6 members.

The departments deals with all matters related to academics in the school. Such include administration of examinations, results analysis, handling exams related discipline cases and ensuring academic programes are implemented.

The success of this department has greatly contributed to the recent improvement in the school performance in the National Examinations. The members of the academic  committe are:

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

The science department in Kaaga Boys is one of the oldest department which was established at the start of the school. The departments consist of three subjects; Chemistry, Physics and Biology, all manned by eleven competents teachers.  The school has two old laboratories and a modern laboratory which was constructed in 2014. This is where the students learn practical lesson on manipulation and handling of different apparatus.

The mean score in the three sciences subjects has continued to improve in thne past five years.  This is attributed to availability of resources and choice of subject and to some extent, change of the attitude that science subjects are difficult. In the department, we have a motto that goes "Sky is the limit"

BOARDING DEPARTMENT

Kaaga Boys High School is a boarding school. It has six spacious dormitories which 

accommodate boys in small cubicles. Each cubicle accommodates a maximum of 12 students. The bedding are coded in colours depending on class level. This makes it possible to identify the form to which a student belongs.

The boxes are placed on racks.

     The department has one main challenge; students crossing a public road at night when going to upper dorms to sleep.The school has a plan to build a fly-over in the future.

MATHS DEPARMENT

Mathematics is one the core subjects taught at Kaaga Boys High School. In the department

We have   nine (9) members of staff . Due to positive attitude and a lot of practice,

Mathematics is one of the favourite subjects for the boys. The performance in mathematics

Is good and this is as a result of inculcating  positive attitude in students right from form one

hence motivating  them positively. In this department, we have a Mathematics club that helps to boost the performance of the subject. Other programmes in place are Tuesday morning C.A.T, Wednesday and Sunday discussions, Maths contests and symposium.
